General RegulationsforWright’s Company of Grenadiers1st Royal Regiment of Foot, Inc.
There is no documentation for facial hair in the 18th C. British army. All members will be clean-shaven. Three-days growth is considered clean-shaven. The British army regulated the length of hair, which was typically 10 inches or longer. Members will grow their hair long, wear a wig, or wear hairpieces sewn into their caps or clipped to their hair. Modern cigarettes, cigars or pipes are not allowed at events when the public is present. If you need to smoke you must remove yourself, or smoke a proper 18th century pipe. Modern tattoos or other body art should not be visible. Modern eyewear is not allowed. If you must wear corrective lenses, you are encouraged to wear contact lenses. This gives you the best, most correct impression. If you cannot wear contacts, you may wear original 18th century frames with correct prescriptions or reproduction 18th century frames with correct lenses. If you are new to the hobby, it would be wise to talk to the command staff, so that they can guide you to a merchant who carrys the correct item. Private soldiers and NCOs should remember that ALL their possessions would be carried on their back, meaning you would have a minimum of camp gear. With that in mind, these items are not appropriate in camp: Wooden camp chests, chairs & tables, fabric water carriers, inappropriate tents, braziers and any plastic or modern containers (includes soda or beer bottles; fill your cup & hide the bottle) Likewise, the items carried by the private soldiers must be kept accurate to what a common soldier might have carried. Items that are not appropriate for a common soldier include: Jewelry, pocket watches and chains, (watch chains are 19th century), family badges or crests, modern glasses & sunglasses or tinted glasses, Masonic or religious emblems. What is kept inside a member’s tent is their own business and is not regulated by the Company. However, no non-period items should be visible. Non-period items must be covered, or the tent flaps closed at all times.
Additionally, we have more detail on soldiers' uniform and equipment, and assistance on how to get what you need. We also have requirements for our distaff members. Please follow the links below. Requirements for a soldier's clothing and equipmentRequirements for women's and children's clothing
